                                               Presidents Message May 2008

Volunteer - a person who performs a service willingly and without pay

POENB is an all volunteer organization.

We so value the importance of volunteering that is it one of the 2 topics our Scholarship Fund Applicants can chose to write about.

On May 10 we will need volunteers at Beach Clean-Up for Valley Grove and Price’s Bend.  May 25 POENB we’ll have our first major Social Event of 2008 Parti Gras and volunteers will be needed to help with set-up, work at the party and definitely with clean-up the following morning.

We will need volunteers to perform those aforementioned tasks at our future social events, Adult Beach Party, Pasta Party, Chili/Chowder, Children’s Halloween and New Years Eve.  We also need POENB to be represented at the 4th of July Picnic, a huge event that requires many hands to make light the load.

Why volunteer?  If not for the satisfaction of being a positive part of a greater whole, and to know that you have helped to make that whole that entity better for you having been a part of it, then consider this, without volunteers to perform tasks we will be forced to pay for the people and finished products that go into making our social events special life long memories of living on Eatons Neck (the 2nd topic our Scholarship Applicants can write about).  Less volunteers means higher ticket prices, something no one wants.

Volunteering can be grand gestures and great commitment, pledging many hours of time or expending great physical efforts.  Many members, your neighbors, have already given and given of themselves. Whether it was to build the Kayak Rack at Valley Grove (another one will be built on May 10 for Price’s Bend) or to plan and prepare for Beach Clean-Up and the running of the Beach as the Beach Chairs, Jim Morcerf and Bob Pisicani have done, or those who helped with the Egg Hunt chaired by Karen Pulver and Nancy Whelan, or the 3 member committee who volunteered to review the materials and award the POENB Scholarship, Suzanne Gentry, Lori Nimmo and Mary Kelly.  Mary also stepped forward to Chair the Children’s Summer Workshop. Kristi Cartolano volunteered to Co-Chair Adult Beach Party with Kevin O’Neill and she has volunteered to be Membership Chair. Joe Cancroft creator of Parti Gras will again Chair it, our largest event, this year we again expect more than 300 people! Or the many generous members who donated to the scholarship fund.

But you don’t have to Chair an event or make a huge commitment, to be a positive part of POENB, just a kind gesture like Peter Dennin, who helped deliver communications for the Association by taking a batch to distribute during his run.  Or like our many dedicated block captains who deliver Changing Tides to all residents of our area, organized by Block Captain Chair Pat Brumm.

Whether you bring or bake a dessert for a party or lend your valuable sweatequity to Association events or projects or support members children’s futures through your scholarship fund donations, your contributions are important and appreciated.

So you see making a positive contribution to your Association can take many forms, perhaps this year you can find a way to volunteer.

Thank you to our members and on behalf of our members I would like to thank all of our volunteers, from our founders on through to those yet to serve.

Respectfully submitted,

Joni Altner
